A Clinical Study of the Frozen Shoulder



Abstract
This is to present the clinical review of 320 cases of the frozen shoulders which were managed at Fatima hospital for 7 years from 1973 to 1979 and the followings are the summary of this study.
1. The female was predominently involved by 63% compared to the male by 37%.
2. The age of the onset ranged from 44 years to 82 years with the average being 60 years in the male and from 37 to 83 years with the average being 53 years in the female.
3. The left shoulder was involved in 176 cases and the right in 155 cases with the bilateral involvement in 11 cases.
4. The duration of the illness at first visit ranged from 10 days to 2 years with the average being 3.8 months and the degree of the stiffness was most prominent around 3rd month after the onset.
5. The treatment of these cases was as follows:
a) An intensive active usage of the shoulder and active exercise by themselves by
means of the towel exercise, the pendulum exercise and the wall climbing exercise.
b) The light analgesics for the moderate pain and the oral steroids for the severe
pain and the local injections of steroid for prominent tenderness.
c) The physiotherapy using heat and the active and gentle passive exercises.
6. The cases recovered in the average 29¡¾17 days ranging from 6 days to 119 days.
7. The longer duration of the illness was related to the earlier recovery but the degree of the stiffness did not influence the period of the recovery.
8. There was nearly no case to have the manipulation under the anesthesia or the surgery for the prolonged stiffness.
